Brahms was hailed by Schumann as “the rightful heir to the mantle of Beethoven.” His First Symphony is a worthy successor with its dramatic strength, lyrical power and triumphant soundscape – it is arguably one of the greatest first symphonies ever written. Composer-in-Residence Peter Boyer’s vibrant universe of sound takes center with Apollo and Grammy Award nominee Caroline Goulding performs the Sibelius Violin Concerto, which contrasts the dark, dreamy and reflective with an air of passionate urgency, gypsy dance and boundless virtuosity.
